Islamic Reform in Turkey

Mehmet Görmez is the director of the project in Turkey to review the ahadith and come up with a more modern reading of Islam. He says: 'We will make a new compilation of the hadith and re-interpret them if necessary... The project takes its inspiration from the interpretations of the modernist vein of Islam. … We want to bring out the positive side of Islam that promotes personal honor, human rights, justice, morality, women's rights, respect for the other.'

Daniel Pipes on FrontPageMagazine writes on these efforts of a thorough revision of the ahadith. His article is worthwhile reading, not in the least because of the links to interviews with Turks involved in the project - and some who are critical about it.
